Still Born

Still Born by Cheryl Lawrie

still born

I wonder whether God had tried before,
but it hadn’t worked.
I wonder whether God had sent a messenger to
someone called David or Peter or Joshua
and they decided ‘no’
and their Mary went away
quietly
and gave birth
to one who Isaiah would still have called
‘Immanuel, God with us’.

God, still born into our history.

A baby holding God.

But because he never had a father,
or she never knew her father,
we will never know.
